day 09 - a song that you can dance to: reel big fish - sell out
when i was 19, i went to a dance at the local community college with a bunch of my hometown friends. all night, they played rap and the cha cha slide and other “dance” music. we were all standing around pouting about the crappy music when the DJ finally put some reel big fish on. the dance floor, which had been really crowded for the song before that and which had taken longer to clear out when the smoke alarm went off, was completely empty except for five kids from my hometown, who proceeded to skank their hearts out for 3 minutes. this was the first thing that popped into my head when i saw this question, hahaha.
i can’t remember if either of us actually posted this video (viciousone recorded this) of lauris vidal from the haiti relief show we went to at the social. it was so awkward being, literally, the only people in the venue, but then lauris played and it was fucking badass.
Heres another video from the TWLOHA Heavy and Light kickoff show. This was a special moment for me on a special night. Thank you again to everyone who made it what it was. Also thank you to xnewyorklove for posting the video. This song is called Save Your Ass. You can get it here.
i’m gonna go out on a limb and call this one of the best shows of the year. i don’t care if it’s still fucking january, i don’t care that nobody in that venue was clapping with the same rhythm, i don’t care if this isn’t a particularly great video- it was such a perfect fucking night.
and most days this world has thinned me to the point where I am just another cloud forgetting another flock of swans
but believe me when I tell you that my soul has squeezed into narrow spaces
place your hand beneath your head when you sleep tonight and you may find it there
This is not video from last night, but it’s the poem I loved, nonetheless. It’s the one I quoted in my 365 post last night. There are several names for it on Youtube, but I guess I’ll settle for ‘Come Into This’. Anis Mojgani does beautiful things with words. It makes me want to be better. To be worthy of listening. It reminds me of Rumi. It makes me happy.
i am still waiting for the sun to come up. i don’t care if it ever does; i am warm enough.
anis mojgani (@mojgani) performed some poems for us at TWLOHA’s heavy & light (part 2). i love being read to by people who are good at it, and i love hearing poetry even though i can’t read it for myself. this was not my favorite of the ones he performed last night, but i haven’t found a decent recording of the other one yet.
